ROC is a charitable company based in the east of Gravesend, whose mission is to raise the quality of life for all generations in the area.
ROC is run along christian principles and enjoys good relationships with many local community organisations, schools, churches and residents associations. ROC has also worked closely with various community forums, focus groups and Gravesham Borough Council (GBC) and the local police force.
Currently ROC has no full time staff but it's work is supported by volunteers that represent many different ethnic, social and cultural backgrounds. Our directors have a variety of skills such as project management, social action, management and financial control which enable us to be effective in our mission.
Local Information
Gravesham is located in North Kent near to the Dartford river crossings. According to the 2001 Census there are 95,717 people currently living in Gravesham. Of that number over 20,000 are under 16 and again over 20,000 are over 60 years of age.
The communities where ROC started it's work have many difficulties and socio-economic problems as illustrated by their scores in the Department of the Enviroment 2000 Indicies of Deprivation of 35.75 and 38.65 for Westcourt and Riverside (including the Northcourt estate) wards.
ROC's work initially focussed particularly on the two estates of Westcourt and Northcourt - in particular one of our directors lived and worked on the estate for 3 years getting to know the people and working alongside them, in a house provided by GBC. One of the activities undertaken included a comprehensive survey of 57% of the households to discover peoples perceptions of the estate and ideas on how to solve those problems. This work was undertaken to inform the Northcourt Action Group - co-chaired by the GBC Community Safety Team and the local police Crime Reduction Unit - which then drew up and implemented an action plan to address the concerns and issues raised.
